Pausing For Spiritual Growth

If we are on a program of constant self improvement, we will eventually find ourselves in a position of leadership. Many of us tend to get in this position and try to lead and continue to do the work that got us here. The Bible offers plenty of consul on this subject.

For instance Acts 6:1-7  gives us the story of the number of followers growing so fast that the twelve Apostles were not keeping up with the care of all the widows. Since they had to be about the business of spreading the Word, they decided to appoint the duties to seven selected from among the followers. This allowed the Apostles to do the work they were commissioned to do and the delegated work got done in an excellent way as well.

This model worked out so well that it became the model of leadership for the first century church as outlined in 1 Timothy 3:1-13, where we see the selection of elders and deacons.

God’s plan includes the need for organizational structure to get His work done. Those of us who hold leadership roles in the secular world would do well to lead as God taught us. For an excellent article that discusses this further, check out Michael Hyatt’s article on The Bible and Leadership where he discusses Moses and Jethro working out how to manage the children of Israel.
